What is it?

The CSCS Profiled Route is a scheme that has been setup by the CSCS to allow highly qualified site supervisors and site managers to gain their CSCS competence card but who do not possess any construction qualifications. Previous the CSCS had issued cards solely on basis of experience as evidence of competence or industry accreditaion. This was commonly known as Grandfather Rights but is now no longer available except in a few rare cases.

Who is it for?

The profiling route is there for experienced site managers and site supervisors. It is for those who have or have had a site management background, that is that they have experience working for a principle contractor and have overseen all works.

Who can apply?

The CSCS Profiled routine was up until recently only open to those site supervisors and site managers with 3 years of commercial works experience. However, the CSCS recognize that there are four types of construction supervisors and managers and they are managing different projects and so have opened the route to include civil works, refurbishment and housing.

What about the unemployed?

Because you don’t need to be currently employed, the profiling route is the ideal and sometimes the only legitimate route for the unemployed. See the report “Are You Without Work And Would Like Help?”

How does it works?

In brief, I as your CSCS Reviewer have to build with your assistance a profile for someone else to say that you are qualified and how we do that is by presenting on paper evidence material to say who you are and to qualify your professional knowledge and experience. The evidence that we need are;

That’s it. The entire application process from beginning to end is done through emails and phone calls.

Why skill the workforce?

All employers in commercial construction now have a statutory obligation to train their employees to the required level of competences, which have been determined by the industry. “The current industry standard for construction in the UK is the NVQ, or National Vocational Qualification, and provides a route for experienced workers to turn their skills and experience into qualifications.”

Why are NVQs so popular ?

This On-Site Assessment and Training routine, or OSAT, is popular – with employers because it qualifies their work force with no onsite down-time – and with employees because it gives them a route to obtaining a CSCS Card and becoming a qualified member of the workforce.

How does it works

The most effective route to an NVQ qualification is the OnSite Assessment and Training route (or OSAT). You will need at least 3 years relevant experience but there is little or no downtime because the NVQ assessor will visit you at your place of work while building your portfolio. The Assessor will periodically assess your work and also provide training to build up any knowledge that maybe lacking.

Fast Tracked NVQs

An NVQ qualification via onsite assessment can take up to 9 months to complete but for those who are in a hurry the same NVQ can be done over a more intensive few weeks, depending on knowledge and experience.

What about Funding

Government funding is selectively available but is not always available. Grants are available from the CITB for companies who are members.

How do you Register

Becoming an Accredited Company

Pre-qualification was designed to lessen the work in procurement at the vetting stage by pre-qualifying a supplier for many clients. However, each client is able to select from a range of accrediting organisations and therefore there is a need for each supplier to hold a variety of accreditation. It is not all bad news! CHAS is recognised by most all other accrediting organisation as the bench mark for health and safety and therefore holding the CHAS accreditation reduces the application process (but not cost) by approximately 50% for most other accreditations.

Training the Workforce

Competence through recognised qualifications is now being firmly enforced through the main Principal Contractors, Local Authorities and is an inferred requirement of Pre-Qualification Questionnaires (PQQ’s) and Safety Schemes In Procurement (SSIP’s) such as CHAS, SAFEcontractor and EXOR etc. This is why the main construction employers are insisting on a qualified work force. The CDM regs (Construction Design Management Regulations) also, as a legal requirement, require a trained, qualified and competent workforce and RivaSure assists professional individuals and companies to meet these requirements in its CSCS Profiling and NVQ assessment services.

Under the direction of the Health and Safety at Work Act all individuals at the work place are responsible for health and safety and the roles and responsibilities vary depending on which working sector each individual finds themselves.
